New Delhi: Want a child ? Buy one. Is he disabled? Buy another. Quest for a male child has turned into a shopping expedition for a family who lament having adopted a child who later was found to have disabilities.
Nirlep Singh and his wife Harpreet adopted Pushpendra from Child Welfare Home in Delhi, a private adoption agency, when he was just four months old.
A few months later, they found that Pushpendra could not walk properly or talk. Now the couple wants another child – that too a boy....

Pune: The Maharshtra government has taken it's first hesitant steps in curbing child Trafficking in the state.
All Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) across the state have been asked to stop sending children to Preet Mandir.
Activists from NGOs across Pune demonstrated outside the office of the Commissioner for Women and Child Development, asking him to take action against those involved in the adoption racket exposed by CNN-IBN's Special investigation Team.
Says a member of an NGO, Nakul Kante, "It is our demand that Preet Mandir be completely shut down."

Pune: Adoption is not charity—it's about creating a new family. However, for foreigners looking for Indian babies the drill is simple. They just need to talk dollars.
Six CNN-IBN reporters conducted a Special Investigation over six months in Pune, Maharashtra, Rourkela, Cochin and London.
Two CNN-IBN reporters posed as an NRI couple wanting to adopt a child. They landed up at an adoption center in Pune called Preet Mandir, where the owner J S Bhasin has babies on offer—readymade and off the shelf.
What J S Bhasin does is a crime and the law calls such a person a child trafficker. Bhasin has been selling babies to foreigners for years, breaking every adoption law in the country. Preet Mandir is his baby shop....

Baby snatchers in the dock
Mumbai: Seventy-two hours after CNN-IBN exposed a booming adoption racket operating from the heart of Maharashtra, promises of affirmative action have poured in.
Maharshtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has assured action against the adoption centers. "Earlier we had heard these were social workers doing a good job, but after these reports, we will certainly take action. An inquiry commission will look into the matter," Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh said....

Pune agency violates adoption laws

Pune: Arun Dohle is a German who was born to Indian parents. In 1973, Arun's adoptive parents walked into Mahila Sewagram Ashram in Pune, adopted him, and returned to Germany.
"I am not against adoption or inter-country adoption. I am against the way it is done," he says.
Arun believes that the basic premise behind adoption in places like Mahila Sewagram Ashram is wrong. "Parents think they are adopting orphans and not children who've been taken from parents," he says.
Now, 33 years later, he is angry and trying to make sense of it all. "Once you realise that you are nothing else but a chicken which can be moved like a commodity, it's just bad," he resents.
Way back in 1973, India did not have an adoption law....

Rourkela (Orissa): The adoption racket is now a nationwide phenomenon — from cities to remote villages there is big money to be made.
CNN-IBN's Special Investigation Team travelled to Rourkela, Orissa's steel city, to find out how the steel city has become a den for child trafficking.
Tribal children brought from in and around Sundergarh district are sold in the name of adoption at illegal adoption centres which have mushroomed in the city over the past few years.
What's even more shocking is the fact that the adoption agencies are run by highly placed government officials.
There are six adoption agencies in Rourkela and all of them are illegal....

Maharashtra: Touts of adoption agencies love to tour villages in Maharashtra. Here babies from poor families and from unwed mothers can be bought cheap and then sold at adoption homes as orphans.
"In rural areas in particular, the chances of this happening is quite high. Babies can be found in certain villages in the eight districts of Marathwada and Jalgaon," says Chairman Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Aurangabad, Dr Wankhede.
The CWC in Aurangabad gets approximately 40 abandoned children annually.
CWC member from Solapur Devayani Tumma often gets calls from adoption agencies making a sales pitch for abandoned children. “Adoption agencies call us and tell us to send the babies to their institutions,” she says.
However, social workers from adoption homes often bypass the committee and go scouting for couples willing to sell children....

TROTWOOD — Blacks need to care for black children who need homes, the
creator of a minority adoption program said Sunday.
"These kids are our kids," said the Rev. George Clements, the Catholic
priest who founded One Church, One Child in 1980 in Chicago.
Today One Church, One Child programs in 30 states have helped the
adoption of more than 100,000 children.
Clements urged the predominantly black audience at the Phillips Temple
CME Church to recall African tribal heritage. "When somebody dies,
somebody comes along and takes those children," said Clements, who has
adopted four children.

THE registrar of the Irish Adoption Board employed corrupt adoption facilitator My Linh Soland to act as a guide last week - despite the fact that she was under investigation by his organisation and the gardai. Kiernan Gildea travelled to Vietnam with a scout group on a volunteering holiday which also included sightseeing excursions.

Adoption firm loses civil case

Napa prosecutors are looking to the sale of a local house later this month to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in reimbursement for victims of a defunct Napa adoption firm.
Prosecutors won a $368,000 default civil judgment July 11 against Ivan Jerdev, former president of adoption firm Yunona USA. The majority of which will go to reimburse 118 victims across the country who allege Yunona offered orphans for adoption who never available. About $60,000 will be paid out in civil penalties for violating state business laws.
Yet Jerdev won't pay a dime out of his own pocket because he is in Russia, reportedly facing child trafficking charges. A default judgment occurs when civil defendants fail to appear in court to defend themselves, but the other party delivers enough evidence to convince a judge to make a ruling....
