Volunteers in Confucian South Korea help open doors to orphanage awareness, social programs

Children at the Hwasung Baby orphanage in Seoul may not have the best lives in the world. They don't have the comfort of a loving mother and father or the security of a parent to tuck them in every night, but one thing the children do have is visitors. Korean and ex-pat volunteers visit on Saturdays, Sundays and sometimes during the week.

On a recent Saturday in the common room at the home, a group of around 20 children, who range in age from newborns to eight years old, sat with half as many volunteers watching television and slowly getting to know each other. It didn't take long for the children to make the first move. Any adult sitting on the floor was fair game for the boys and girls who began exploring the laps being made available to them....
